Deficiency of Chlorine

Chlorine is an acidic anion, its depletion produces an anion gap and alkalosis*.
* Pathological condition due to accumulation of base or loss of acid.

Causes

In vomiting, due to gastric outlet obstruction, chloride is lost as hydrochloric acid. Chlorine deficiency may occur with formula diets in infants.

Prevention and treatment

Chlorine deficiency is treated with administration of potassium chloride.
