Causes

Folic acid deficiency may be caused due to lack of folates or folic acid in the diet.

Signs and symptoms

In the case of folic acid deficiency, formimine glutamic acid (FIGLU) is excreted in the urine. This results in megaloblastic anaemia, glossitis*, and low number of RBC's in the bone marrow.

* Inflammation of the tongue

Prevention and treatment

The administration of folic acid to patients with megaloblastic anaemia brings about a dramatic reversal of changes in the bone marrow.
