| Deficiency of iron leads to anaemia. Causes
Deficiency of iron may result when the dietary intake is low or when absorption is
hindered or if there is an increased requirement of iron that is not met.
Signs and symptoms
The common symptoms of iron deficiency are tiredness, fatigue, lethargy and
breathlessness. In severe cases, there may be palpitations and even congestive heart
failure.
Prevention and treatment
The administration of iron corrects the deficiency. A daily dose of a tablet of ferrous
sulphate, (100 mg) for women will compensate for loss of iron from the body during
menstruation.
