| The deficiency of potassium leads to a condition
called hypokalemia. Causes
Hypokalemia occurs when there is deficient intake, excessive loss from gastrointestinal
tract by vomiting or diarrhoea. There is also considerable loss of potassium during the
administration of diuretics*. It also occurs when one suffers from a heat stroke or
violent exercise.
*Increases urine excretion.
Signs and symptoms
The early evidence is loss of appetite, nausea, muscular weakness, and loss of deep
tendon jerks. Abdominal distention may result when deficiency occurs after surgery.
Prevention and Treatment
Administration of potassium orally is the best way to treat potassium deficiency.
