| Causes Sodium deficiency is
manifested as hyponatremia. The symptoms occur due to overhydration of cells of the
central nervous system.
Signs and symptoms
Pure sodium deficiency causes weakness, giddiness, anorexia, cramps in muscles which
are twitching, convulsions, collapsed veins, cold extremities and low blood pressure.
Associated water deficiency is also common.
Prevention and treatment
Milder cases are treated with oral salt supplements and restriction of fluid. In cases
that are more serious, the sodium is given through hypertonic saline.
