Deficiency of Vitamin E
Vitamin E deficiency may be associated with a discrete syndrome.

Causes

Deficiency of vitamin E may be caused due to selective malabsorption of the vitamin or when recessive mutation causes vitamin E deficiency and ataxia*. More commonly intestinal fat malabsorption can cause deficiency of all fat-soluble vitamins.

* Failure of muscular coordination

Signs and symptoms

The manifestations of the deficiency include, gait disturbance, fluid retention, anaemia. In adults, apathy, inability to concentrate and loss of balance are the common symptoms.

Prevention and treatment

Treatment 50 to 100 I.U. per day orally is most effective when initiated early in the course of the disease.
