Iodine is a non-metallic, blackish-grey element that is essential for good health. In its free form, iodine is a gas. In nature, it is found as a compound.

Food sources
Iodine is found in fish, shrimp, lobster, oysters and iodized salt.

Functions
Iodine is necessary for the formation of two hormones produced by the thyroid gland- the largest of the endocrine glands in the body. The thyroid gland produces hormones, which are vital, for growth, reproduction and mental health, bone formation, the manufacture of proteins and a cell's oxidative process.

Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA)
The daily requirement for iodine ranges from 0.15-0.25 mgms per day. This is normally supplied by a well balanced diet.
