Toxicity of Vitamin E

Hypervitaminosis in the case of Vitamin E is very rare. Relatively large doses of vitamin E have been taken by some, for extended periods without any harm.

Causes

True toxicity appears to occur in two situations - in subjects receiving oral anti-coagulants, and in premature infants.

Signs and symptoms

Large doses may cause muscle weakness, nausea, and fatigue and may decrease serum thyroid hormones and elevate serum triglycerides in females.

Prevention and treatment

There is little evidence of harm at doses of less than 1000 I.U. per day.
