Vitamins C

Vitamin C or ascorbic acid is a white powder, which dissolves easily in water. It is also a powerful water - soluble anti oxidant.

Food sources
Citrus fruits like oranges, lemon, sweet lime are excellent sources of vitamin C. Other fruits like pineapple, strawberries, guavas and Indian gooseberry (amla) are extremely rich source of vitamin C. Vegetable like spinach, green chilies, tomatoes, cabbage and turnips are very good sources of the vitamin.

Functions
Vitamin C helps in the formation of collagen, which is found through out the body and helps to maintain the structure of tissues. Vitamin C also acts as an anti oxidant therefore neutralising potentially harmful reactions in the body- reactions, which can lead to cell damage associated with cancer, heart disease and other related problems.

The RDA for Vitamin C is 60 mg per day.
