Colour Therapy

Introduction

The aesthetic beauty of colour is visible all around us in nature, plants and animals. Colours can also contribute a great deal to the mind and emotions.

Colour therapy uses coloured lights to treat disease and disorder and to help restore good health.

In ancient times, Egyptians and Greeks used coloured minerals, stones and dyes as remedies to heal various diseases and disorders. According to them red, yellow and blue corresponded to the body, soul and spirit.

During the medieval period, an Arab physician, Avicenna propagated the importance of colour in diagnosis and treatment. According to him colour was an observable symptom of disease. He prepared a chart which related colour to temperament and physical condition of the body. He believed that red moved blood, white cooled it and yellow reduced pain and inflammation.

According to Ayurveda, an ancient Indian system of medicine, human beings respond to coloured lights and are affected in different ways by rays of various wavelengths. Individuals are influenced by the seven colours of the rainbow - violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red.

Principles of Colour Therapy

Colour affects our mind and body. Human body is able to respond in subtle ways to electromagnetic radiations. Individuals receive and absorb electromagnetic radiation from the sun and emit it in a unique 'aura' a pattern of colours peculiar to that person.

The subtle energies from the environment are distributed through the body through seven power centers or charkas. This energy, in the form of light, is attracted by the aura surrounding the human body. Just like a prism, the aura breaks the energy into seven streams, corresponding to the seven colours of the rainbow. Each colour is drawn to a particular chakra. Any imbalance of energy in the charkas influences the corresponding gland, giving rise to hormonal changes, which, in turn, produce immediate changes in mood, appearance, respiration, digestion, and intelligence.

The treatment consists of bathing the body in coloured light, with appropriate colours being decided upon by the therapist. The aim is to restore the natural balance in the pattern of the aura. Colours have an effect on the total energetic system of the body. Healing with colours is based upon understanding the attributes associated with the chakras and the negative qualities that are manifested as a result of imbalances in the chakras.

Principles of Treatment

Before any treatment can be given, it is important for the colour therapist to diagnose the problem or the disorder. For this, the therapist has to pay extra attention to the patient’s spine. Each individual vertebra reflects the condition of a particular part of the body. The aura from each vertebra is believed to indicate the health of its corresponding body part. Each vertebra is related to one of the colours of the visible spectrum, which are repeated in their usual sequence from the top to the base of the spine.

The treatment consists of bathing the body in coloured light with appropriate colours being decided upon by the therapist. Colours are projected on to the body through lamps and filters. Full spectrum lamps having special quartz filters are better because they produce colours of all wavelengths and frequencies. This treatment should be carried under the guidance of a trained therapist.

Indirect use of coloured lights is also beneficial. Drinking water from coloured glass containers is one such method.

Daily exposure to certain colours stimulates energies. This can be done via clothes, foods and accessories. Coloured gem stones are worn as amulets and jewellery by some for the same purpose.

But one should always remember that wrong colour combinations can cause illness. Also, colour therapy is best used as an adjunct to other therapies and is not advisable as a total self-care method.
