Introduction
Naturopathy or Nature Cure, is a combination of a variety of natural therapeutics and methods of healing. Passed down through ages, this system leans upon the wisdom of the ancient and modern science. The curative properties of nature's elements-the sun, air, earth, and water- are employed as natural cures. Since time immemorial these natural resources have been used for treatment and keeping fit. The primary cause of all diseases, according to nature cure, is the conscious or unconscious violation of nature's law, and disease in reality is self-purifying effort by the body to heal itself. All healing comes from within the body itself. There are self-curative forces inherent in the human body working towards health and healing; the physician through his nature cure techniques lends only an intelligent assistance. Indian religious texts lay great emphasis on living in harmony with Nature and making use of natural stimuli for promotion of health and cure of disease. In recent times, Mahatma Gandhi was a great propagator of nature cure methods.

Principles of Naturopathy

Naturopathy is a healing method that has its roots in almost all the cultures. India's Ayurveda, traditional Chinese and Greek medicine, all lay great emphasis on the natural healing system. They believe that the body has natural abilities to resist diseases and to heal itself.

Naturopathy believes in the principle of five elements of nature - earth, sky, fire, water, and wind. These five elements are the source of energy and help in the treatment. The root cause of all disease is supposed to be the accumulation of foreign matter and waste products in the body. In diseased state the body excretes all foreign matter and waste products. Naturopathy hence tries to eliminate the root cause of illness. It does not suppress symptoms because it might interfere with healing.

Pran is the vitality force. Naturopathy aims at providing life force to the body by protecting it from internal and external threats. It helps in physical and mental well being. This can be achieved by harmonious and coordinated functioning of the five elements of nature. Control over senses is the foundation of good health. A well planned life and positive thinking has a favorable effect on the healing process. Simple or sattvic food, proper rest, sound sleep, cleanliness, and peaceful mind are the features of a planned life style.

Naturopathy believes that every body has germs that grow and multiply. To prevent germ growth, it prescribes to clean and purify the body regularly. Nature cure physicians do not believe in giving poisonous drugs to kill germs. They rather purify the blood and tissues to develop immunity. Lowered vitality and increase of toxic and morbid matter in the body causes a diseased state. Increase in cholestrol leads to high blood pressure and risk of heart attack.

Treatment in Naturopathy

The focus of naturopathy is to provide immediate relief to physical pain and modify behavior patterns that result in healthy living.

Treatment in naturopathy begins with the initial contact of the patient. Various phases of the treatment include examination of the disease, building rapport with the patient, diagnosis, developing treatment plan and finally application of the treatment.

The various methods of treatment are body purification techniques, naturopathic techniques, and behavior modification techniques.

Eye washing, water sniffing, stomach washing are part of body purification techniques. These techniques flush away the toxic agents of the body.

Naturopathic techniques include hydrotherapy, mud therapy, herbal therapy, fast therapy, and reform of the person's diet. Depending on the disease and its symptoms, the above mentioned therapies are applied to cure it.

Behavior therapy emphasizes on bringing a change in the life style of individuals. This can be achieved by practicing yoga, doing meditation and applying stress-reducing methods including breathing and relaxation techniques. Behaviour therapy gives you a healthy body and an alert mind.
