Deficiency of Biotin
Causes

Deficiency has been observed in some individuals who have consumed raw eggs over long periods. It has also been reported in children and adults who have received chronic parenteral nutrition lacking biotin.

Signs and symptoms

Signs and symptoms of the deficiency include dermatitis, atrophic glossitis, muscle pain, anorexia and slight anaemia.

Prevention and treatment

Large doses of biotin are administered to babies with infantile seborrhea* and to individuals with genetic alterations of biotin dependant enzymes.

* Excessive excretion of sebum
