| Deficiency of calcium gives rise to a condition
known as hypocalcemia. Causes
Combined deprivation of calcium and vitamin D readily promotes hypocalcemia. This
combination of events is observed in the various malabsorption states and occurs from
inadequate diets.
Signs and symptoms
The prominent signs and symptoms are tetany*, and related phenomena such as increased
neuromuscular excitability, laryngospasm, muscle cramps, and tonic - clonic convulsions.

Prevention and treatment
Calcium is used in the treatment of calcium deficiency states and as a dietary
supplement. In severe manifest tetany, symptoms are best brought under control by
intravenous medication.
