| Causes Folic acid deficiency
may be caused due to lack of folates or folic acid in the diet.
Signs and symptoms
In the case of folic acid deficiency, formimine glutamic acid (FIGLU) is excreted in
the urine. This results in megaloblastic anaemia, glossitis*, and low number of RBC's in
the bone marrow.
* Inflammation of the tongue
Prevention and treatment
The administration of folic acid to patients with megaloblastic anaemia brings about a
dramatic reversal of changes in the bone marrow.
