Deficiency of Iodine
Iodine deficiency manifests itself as 'goiter' a modular growth of the thyroid gland. The other disorders are still-births, abortions, endemic cretinism* and various degrees of neurological defects.

* Dwarfism

Causes

Deficiency of iodine is seen in the Himalayan region, producing endemic goiter. Deficient trapping of iodine by the thyroid gland, is caused by goitrogens (interfere in the absorption of iodine).

Signs and symptoms

An enlarged thyroid gland is one of the most prominent signs of iodine deficiency.

Prevention and treatment

The best way to supplement iodine is in common salt, bread, water, or any other medium.
