| Dietary deficiency of phosphorus usually never occurs under normal
circumstances since it is easily available in an average normal diet. Causes
Low serum phosphorus occurs during starvation, malabsorption, hyperparathyroidism,
vitamin D deficiency, diabetes, acute alcoholism and severe burns.
Signs and symptoms
Loss of appetite, nausea, weakness and malaise* and vitamin D resistant rickets in
children and osteomalacia in adults.
* Feeling of discomfort.
Prevention and treatment
Disodium or dipotassium phosphate is given orally. Intravenous phosphorus therapy is
given when serum phosphorus level is less than one mg/100ml.
