Deficiency of Phosphorus
Dietary deficiency of phosphorus usually never occurs under normal circumstances since it is easily available in an average normal diet.

Causes

Low serum phosphorus occurs during starvation, malabsorption, hyperparathyroidism, vitamin D deficiency, diabetes, acute alcoholism and severe burns.

Signs and symptoms

Loss of appetite, nausea, weakness and malaise* and vitamin D resistant rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults.

* Feeling of discomfort.

Prevention and treatment

Disodium or dipotassium phosphate is given orally. Intravenous phosphorus therapy is given when serum phosphorus level is less than one mg/100ml.
