| Zinc deficiency is more common than is perceived. It
is more prevalent in populations subsisting on cereal protein. Causes
Zinc deficiency is caused due to decreased absorption in a high cereal diet or due to
excess loss due to parasites, excessive perspiration or urinary excretion.
Signs and symptoms
Zinc deficiency results in poor appetite, loss of taste, mental lethargy, and delayed
wound healing.
Prevention and treatment
Consumption of bread leavened with yeast helps communities suffering from zinc
deficiency. Zinc sulphate daily in divided doses is best administered with fruit juices.
