| Lactose is a disaccharide, which is
broken down into glucose and galactose by the enzyme lactase. Lactose intolerance as the
name suggests, is a condition when the body is not able to digest the lactose that is
present in milk and milk products. The condition is common among Asians, American-Indians,
Africans and African-Americans. Causes
Lactose intolerance occurs due to the deficiency of the enzyme lactase, which
breaks down the lactose present in milk.
Signs and symptoms
The body naturally starts producing less lactase around age 6. However, the
symptoms often do not begin until early adulthood or later. Signs and symptoms of lactose
intolerance include abdominal distention, flatulence and diarrhoea after the consumption of
moderate to large amounts of lactose containing foods.
The severity of the intolerance varies from one person to another. Many people with this
problem are able to drink small amounts of milk, especially if they eat other foods with
it. Others cannot drink any milk without having symptoms.
Prevention and treatment
This disorder is managed by restricting the ingestion of these foods.
