Toxicity of Calcium
Toxicity of calcium manifests itself as hypercalcemia.

Causes

Ingestion of large quantities of calcium salt does not occur generally by itself. Excess Vitamin D may cause hypercalcemia, except in patients with hypothyroidism, who absorb calcium with increased efficiency.

Signs and symptoms

Clinical symptoms of hypercalcemia are constipation, lethargy, lassitude, rapid onset of fatigue and sometimes, excessive urination. Hypercalcemia crisis produces nausea, vomiting, severe abdominal pain frequently associated with peptic ulcer or pancreatitis*.

* Inflammation of the pancreas.

Prevention and Treatment

Administration of calcium in various forms and dosages according to the cause of hypercalcemia is the most accepted treatment.
