Toxicity of Iodine
Several milligrams of iodine compounds have been linked with thyroid problems or inflammation of the salivary glands.

Causes

Administration of iodine to patients with goiter may produce thyrotoxicosis. This effect is because, with iodine deficiency, the thyroid gland becomes overactive in an attempt to produce the hormone; and when the iodine is supplied, excess hormone is produced resulting in thyrotoxicosis.

Prevention and treatment

If a person needs iodine he should be under medical care and the iodine should be specifically prescribed.
