Hyperkalemia occurs when there is kidney failure, acidosis, and intake of potassium salts
of drugs such as penicillin and iodide.
Signs and symptoms:
General apathy, anorexia, muscle weakness and diminished deep tendon jerks.
Prevention and treatment:
In the case of patients with kidney failure, they are placed on a protein free diet
with simultaneous administration of insulin to shift potassium from the blood into the
body cells.
