| Hypernatremia is diagnosed when the serum sodium
level is 150 mmol per litre or above. Causes:
It can be caused due to decreased water intake, increased water loss through
respiration.
Signs and symptoms:
Increased levels of sodium may cause edema i.e. water retention. Increased sodium
levels may also cause sickle cell anaemia.
Prevention and treatment:
Treatment is by intravenous infusion of 5 % glucose in water.
