Men & Nutrition

The truly healthy male is one who is able to sustain a high level of energy, while cultivating calmness and focus at the same time. He is emotionally stable, mentally lucid, and physically fit. He is well nourished.

Whether motivated by loss of health or the desire to prevent illness, enhance performance, improve appearance, increase longevity, handling stress, improving attitude towards life, men are actively seeking to improve their health through nutrition.

Nutrition is not only a potent weapon for preventing disease and extending lifespan, but also an excellent tool for achieving overall wellness.

Many adult chronic, degenerative diseases result from regular overeating and selecting wrong foods. These foods are high in fat and sugar. Too many refined foods can also cause problems. Such diseases can result in Male pattern obesity (where weight is concentrated in the middle of the body), which is more dangerous than female pattern (more weight in the thighs and hips), for it increases the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. Obesity is also a risk factor for diabetes and is linked to the development of hypertension, stroke, gall bladder disease, musculoskeletal problems, and certain forms of cancer.

Stress related disorders contribute to increased rates of heart attacks, hypertension, and fatigue among males. Poor diet, eating on-the-go, overwork, lack of exercise, and those ever-present family responsibilities are just a few of the stressors present in the lives of many men today. Others include use of tobacco, alcohol, steroids, antibiotics, and other chemicals. These elements contribute to nutrient depletion, which in turn puts more stress upon the body and decreases its coping ability. This vicious cycle can be broken with good nutrition, which can help to overcome destructive habits and addictions, and offset the harmful effects of other stressors.

So it is important that men should find right balance in diet and lifestyle, which includes eating more fruits and vegetables, nuts, whole grains, seeds, fresh animal meats, free of chemicals and antibiotics.

Restricting your consumption on caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, and limiting the fatty, refined, and sugary foods, such as milk products, process meats, fried foods, breads, candies and pastries will help keeping a healthier and longer life.

Good overall health is vital to proper sexual functioning. Men, like women, have special nutrient needs to maintain their energy and sexuality. Health is intimately linked with lifestyle and diet, and you are in control of these factors. You have the power to enhance your vitality and your sexuality. All you need is the right information on how nutritional and environmental factors affect sexual functioning. Safe sex is a big concern today, but if we do not have the energy for sex, we can forget these more adventurous subjects. Sexual function is supported by good diet and nutrient intake. The healthy diet should provide adequate protein and essential fatty acids as well as some cholesterol (eggs, dairy foods) or plant sterols, as are found in olive oil; these foods provide some of the precursors of certain sex hormones.
